I don’t. I’ve long embraced the idea that technological progress’s impact on society isn’t an issue, but how we wield it could be.
Aircraft, chips, nuclear energy, and software have delivered incredible benefits for humanity. They have all been misused. But the issues with their misuse stem more from psychological, sociological, or political factors. Political pundits may dissect why that happens, but innovation can’t be stopped because there are people who might misuse our work. Anyway, there are so many countries, with their individual interests involved. Who can really stop anyone from developing new AI? Barely anyone seems to care about the UN anyway.
As an engineer, I take my role to stand by, promote, and drive innovation as almost a duty. I want to add to the field, not subtract from it. And I hope to uphold this belief for my lifetime. The threat from AGI seems overstated anyway. I can only hope that AI will make the world a better place, not disrupt it.
